GEPCO Peak Hours and Off-Peak Hours

If you have a 3-Phase (TOU – Time of Use) meter installed at your home or business, it is crucial to keep track of Peak and Off-Peak hours. Electricity prices during peak hours are significantly higher than during normal hours. Strictly avoid using heavy appliances like ACs, water motors, or irons during these times.

Detailed Breakdown of Taxes in Your GEPCO Bill

Your total bill is not just the cost of consumed units; it includes various government taxes and surcharges. Understanding these taxes is essential so you know exactly what you are paying for.

  • FPA (Fuel Price Adjustment): Furnace oil, coal, and LNG are used to generate electricity in Pakistan. If global prices for these fuels rise, NEPRA adds this difference to the following month’s bills as FPA. This amount changes every month.

  • F.C. Surcharge (Financing Cost): This surcharge (approximately 43 paisa per unit) is applied to pay the mark-up on loans taken by Power Holding Private Limited (PHPL). It is applied to every single unit consumed.

  • T.R. Surcharge (Tariff Rationalization): The financial difference between the tariff set by NEPRA and the subsidized rates set by the Government of Pakistan is called the TR surcharge. It helps manage government subsidies.

  • GST (General Sales Tax): An 18% General Sales Tax is applied to the total cost of electricity consumed on all WAPDA bills. (This rate may differ for commercial meters).

  • Electricity Duty (ED): This is a provincial tax charged at 1% to 1.5% on the cost of your consumed electricity.

  • PTV Fee: A mandatory Pakistan Television (PTV) license fee of Rs. 35 is included in every residential and commercial GEPCO bill.

  • Income Tax (Advance Tax): If your bill exceeds a certain threshold (e.g., Rs. 25,000) and you are not an active taxpayer (non-filer), an advance income tax is applied. You can claim this amount back in your annual tax return if you become a filer.

Proven Tips to Reduce Your GEPCO Electricity Bill

In an era of rising electricity prices, controlling your bill is a necessity. By following these simple tips, you can significantly reduce your monthly energy costs:

  • Switch to Inverter Appliances: Traditional ACs and refrigerators consume excessive electricity. Switching to Inverter ACs, refrigerators, and fans can cut your energy consumption by 30% to 50%.

  • Avoid Peak Hours Strictly: If you have a TOU meter, absolutely avoid using irons, water pumps, washing machines, and microwaves between 6:30 PM and 10:30 PM.

  • Use LED Lights: Replace old energy savers and incandescent bulbs with high-quality LED lights. They provide brighter light while consuming a fraction of the wattage.

  • Unplug Inactive Electronics: TVs, computers, and mobile chargers draw “vampire energy” even when turned off if they remain plugged in. Pull the plug after use.

  • AC Temperature Management: Set your air conditioner’s thermostat between 24°C and 26°C. Lowering the temperature by just one degree increases your AC’s power consumption by 6-8%.

  • Regular Maintenance: Clean your AC filters monthly and have your refrigerator’s refrigerant gas checked. Poorly maintained appliances draw far more power to operate.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About GEPCO Tariffs

Can I get the taxes on my GEPCO bill waived?
No, the FPA, GST, and TR Surcharge are fixed government taxes and cannot be waived. However, if you are a registered taxpayer (filer), you can adjust the Advance Income Tax in your annual tax returns.
If global fuel prices drop during a specific month (e.g., cheaper coal or gas) or if heavy rains result in an abundance of cheap hydel (water) power generation, NEPRA passes this relief onto consumers by deducting the FPA amount from the bill.
A protected consumer is someone who has consistently used fewer than 200 units of electricity per month for the past 6 consecutive months. These consumers receive a massive government subsidy (discount) on their per-unit rate. Crossing the 200-unit mark even once automatically moves the consumer into the ‘Unprotected’ category, resulting in higher standard rates.

If your meter burns out or becomes defective, GEPCO will issue an ‘Average Bill’. This average is calculated based on your consumption over the last 11 months or your usage during the exact same month in the previous year. This billing can be adjusted once a functional replacement meter is installed.
